I muse upon my country's ills—

The tempest bursting from the waste of Time

On the world's fairest hope linked with man's foulest crime.

~ Herman Melville, from "Misgivings" (1860)

In a poem from the year before he refers to "the meteor of war." Imagine knowing it's all coming.

Melville & Whitman were both born in 1819 but there's no evidence they knew or knew of each other.
