One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion. —Simone de Beauvoir

Isn't this quote better without the last few words? "One's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others." It's a more absolute relationship—I can't claim to be more important than you, I can't claim what I don't deliver. Friendship, compassion et al are just explanations of how to go about offering value. They're important but they only qualify the essential truth.
