Consistency

September 12, 2018

How can I get in a good groove when I'm interrupted all the time, in small ways (tea, anyone?) & large (the holidays started Sunday night, so I've just had 2 days off).

I like to think that in the way olden days this was the highlight of the year—a break from a rigid groove, a trip to the capital (Jerusalem), new smells & sights....

But every day of my life has interest & originality. Which is not the point, but the show, at least back when, HAS to have been part of how the magnificent importance was portrayed. Now it just doesn't seem as good as a random cat video, at least in catching & holding my (our) attention.

My least favorite thing is when a synagogue acts out the Temple service of yore (coming up on Yom Kippur). It just seems tired & worn out, like the Hasids wearing 17th-century garb. We are 21st-century folks & those tidbits of our past don't speak to me in any way at all.

Not sure which I want, novelty or calm, come to think of it. I kick against the traces either way, it seems.

The Brain within its Groove (#556)

The Brain, within its Groove
Runs evenly — and true —
But let a Splinter swerve —
'Twere easier for You —

To put a Current back —
When Floods have slit the Hills —
And scooped a Turnpike for Themselves —
And trodden out the Mills —

Emily Dickinson
